Discovering a Passion for Photography

From an early age, I have always enjoyed taking photographs. Whether I was on holiday or simply driving to visit friends, I would always carry a camera with me. This passion for capturing moments has been a constant companion throughout my life.  Heaven only knows how many photos I would have had at 53 if they had had iPhones back in the 1980s.

Moving to Shetland and Growing as a Photographer

Seventeen years ago, I moved to Shetland, a place that offered countless opportunities to develop my interest in photography further. Living here has allowed me to immerse myself in the unique landscapes and wildlife of the islands and deepen my appreciation for photography and my surroundings.

The Meaning Behind "Aperture Shetland"

You might wonder why I chose the name "Aperture Shetland." The name serves as a tribute to a dear friend who sadly passed away, and it also reflects the essence of photography. The word "aperture" is central to the craft, reminding us that everyone sees the world differently through their own lens. I aim to share this perspective, touring with people who love to take photographs and create lasting memories. I value the time it takes to seek out the perfect image and enjoy revealing the secret spots that only locals know.

Inspiring Others Through Guiding

Taking friends and family around the islands when they visited brought me immense joy. This experience sparked the idea of becoming a guide on the islands. One autumn, while attending a bird identification course, I met a guide who informed me that a new intake for the Green Badge Guide scheme for Shetland was about to begin in just two days. That conversation marked the beginning of my guiding journey.

Becoming a Qualified Tourist Guide

In 2018, I qualified as a Tourist Guide with the Scottish Tourist Guide Association (STGA). Now, I delight in showing visitors the best places to watch wildlife and immerse themselves in all that Shetland has to offer. Through my Tourist Guiding Training, I discovered that Shetland holds even more treasures than I had realised, and sharing this newfound knowledge and passion with others is incredibly rewarding.

Professional Training and Accreditation

The Scottish Tourist Guides Association is the professional membership body for fully trained and accredited tourist guides in Scotland. As an STGA guide, I completed a rigorous training and assessment programme before being admitted to membership. This training covered not only Shetland’s history, culture, and landscape, but also practical guiding skills, such as group management, safety, and effective communication.

Expanding My Experience in the Tourism Industry

When I am not guiding, I have worked with companies that organise all the shore excursions for cruise ships visiting Shetland. Now, I am fully self-employed, and was pleasantly surprised when an expedition company recently approached me to plan their shore excursions to Shetland in 2025 and onward.

Guiding: A Rewarding Adventure

The guiding catchphrase is "GUIDING IS FUN," and it truly is. Beyond the enjoyment, guiding has opened many doors and opportunities for me.

I look forward to welcoming you on a tour of Shetland soon.
