“Paula was extremely well informed and understood immediately the sort of sites I wished to photograph.

She is an amazing, empathetic guide who was very patient with my specific desires and a lot of fun to be with.”

From South Africa to Shetland – 60 Degrees North
From an early age, I have always enjoyed taking photographs. I have always carried a camera with me on holiday or just driving to visit friends. 17 years ago, I came to live in Shetland. During this time, opportunities allowed me to develop my interest in photography further. Why the name Aperture Shetland, you may ask? The name partly remembers a friend who sadly passed away, and secondly, the word aperture has so much to do with photography and how everyone sees things differently. I love touring with people who love to take photos and make memories. I respect the time it takes to find images, and I love to share all the secret little locations only we locals know about.

I found much enjoyment in just taking friends and family around the islands when they came to visit. This got me thinking more about being a guide on the Islands. I was on a bird identifying course one autumn when I met a fellow guide who told me that in two days, the new intake was beginning for those wanting to become a Green Badge Guide for Shetland - and that is where my journey began,

In 2018, I qualified as a Tourist Guide for the Scottish Tourist Guide Association (STGA)

I now enjoy guiding visitors to the best places to watch wildlife and experience the best that Shetland has to offer. During my Tourist Guiding Training, I realised Shetland has many more places and aspects to explore, so sharing my newfound passion and knowledge about our islands is extremely rewarding.

The Scottish Tourist Guides Association are the professional membership body for fully trained and accredited tourist guides in Scotland. As an STGA guide, I have completed a rigorous training and assessment programme before being admitted to membership of the Association. This training covers knowledge of Shetland’s history, culture, and landscape but also includes practical training in professional guiding skills (including group management and safety) and effective communication.

While not guiding, I have been involved with and worked with companies that plan all the Shore Excursions for visiting cruise ships to Shetland. I am now purely self-employed, and it was such a complete surprise when I was recently approached by an expedition company that asked me to plan their shore excursions to Shetland in 2025.

The guiding catchphrase is GUIDING IS FUN; it certainly is that, but I also enjoy the way it has opened so many doors and opportunities for me. I look forward to seeing you on tour in Shetland soon
